So a post on twitter caught my attention…

The post was to the NY times article called Growing up Digital, Wired for Distraction, and can be found here: http://nyti.ms/9eacWa I was reading through it and came across the reference to an article from 2007 in the journal Pediatrics. (the abstract can be found here: http://nyti.ms/9eacWa ) and so I went and looked up the article. Very disappointing. I know that there are a lot of restrictions on how many subjects (because of money) can take part in a study, but 11 then cut down to ten?

And then to continue on an declare an actual effect because of it…. very very sad. Now had they hedged the bet a little it would be marginally ok, but the correlation does not necessarily indicate causation applies. It looks like there may be a place for a path analysis here in which you could determine causation, but you can’t do that with 10 people. *sigh*

The worst part is that I would have totally bought this a couple of years ago. :(

A response to a Ted Talk by Dan Meyer

So, I am currently doing double duty. I am trying to get edgycation.org here back in the swing of things, But I am also working on getting edgycation.jp up and running as well. Here is a video that I posted from my Faculty development series for that aspect of the site.

I hope you like it!

edgylogo86

edgylogo86Hey all,

Those who are subscribed to the feed know that 86 is up and takin out the trash. We spend a little time talking about:

Teacher’s Podcast (a little intro with some constructive criticism)

Audio Boo (a cool little audio blog-like site)

And a great deal more time talking about Pragmatics.

Shows are up! 83 sometime ago and 84 now

Ah, vacation :)

But I’m back and ready to go! 83 has been up for a while, and 84 is up now. Big props to Anthony! You’ll have to listen to the show to find out why :)

Anthony, the Magnet is in the mail. It should arrive very soon.

It’s a shorter show this time round, but it’s up.

More soon!

Just added FaceBook Connect

So for those of you with facebook accounts, you can now log into the comment system with your facebook login. I had mixed feelings about putting this in, Facebook scares me a little (even though we have a page over there, go become a fan!!).

They are beginning to be everywhere, just kind of watching :)

But I think this will help for those out there with a facebook account. So, to comment, you can comment using your Disqus login, your facebook login or neither. I recommend logging in because it will give you more flexibility to moderate your own comments.

Off to class,

Scott

A small diversion

So, this post is very self indulgent. :)

In episode 81 I mentioned using Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog in one of my classes. That set of classes wrapped up today, it was pretty informal or I would give you pages with questions etc.  Anyway, I had decided to get a DVD copy of the show so I would have the subtitles etc.

If you haven’t seen it, go check it out on hulu.com if you are in the States or start here on YouTube if you aren’t. The show is about 40 minutes or so and well worth the  time.

Part of the story is about Dr. Horrible trying to get into the Evil League of Evil. Well, the producers solicited applications from the web, which is where my giggling starts. Do a quick search for ELE or Evil League of Evil on youtube to check out some of the videos that were submitted.

Now the surprising part. As you may know, our theme song was written and performed by Mark Blasco. (to see more of Mark’s work, clink on the Podcasts Themes button there on the right side). So, I was watching the DVD and saw the Special Features area, clicked on that and waded into the ELE applications on the DVD. To my surprise, the video below (showcasing Mr. Terrible) came up. Great audio on the track by the way. But there was something very familiar. I hadn’t paid much attention to the title or the creator of the first one. The song was really catchy and so I checked who the submitter was…. Lo and behold, our very own Mark Blasco held the First Position on the disk!!!!

Congratulations to Mark, both of his videos are pretty cool. (My favorite is still Mr. Terrible.) Check out both of his sites, PodcastThemes and MarkBlasco.com.

Happy Holidays Everybody!

Show 81 takes a look at using dictionaries in the classroom. When should students use them? what is the best way to use them? What kind of dictionary should you recommend?

All this and an incredibly cheesy opening! Wow, a deal at twice the price!

**UPDATE**

I was thinking about dictionaries again and remembered this video I saw about a year ago. Erin McKean at the TED conference.

Dude vs. the Librarian – Show 80

Good Evening all,

Show 80 takes a bit of a look in the mirror and asks “What kind of teacher are you?” To be clear, there can be no right answer for this one, so make sure you can support your answer with examples. Don’t forget to cite your sources :)

By the time you see this, the show should be in your iTunes queue already. What’s that? you aren’t subscribed? Shame on you! get over there and get that done right now. Remember, the first 50 shows now reside in the “EdgyArchive” feed.

And before you go, don’t forget to leave us a message on MyChingo on the right there, or a comment below the show you listened to.
